But the proceedings commenced in dry if overcast conditions with the ceremony outside Prince Philip Hall to bestow the Freedom of Tristan da Cunha upon the Task Force, following which the visitors demonstrated their military prowess by marching around the Settlement and delivering a Salute to the Administrator and the Chief Islander during a march past the Administration Building.

Many of the islanders were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of Hubert Green on Saturday 5th January 2008. He was discovered at home around 9am, by his close friend and neighbor Stella Rogers.

On Friday the 14th December all Government Departments on Tristan closed for the three weeks Christmas break, including the islands only supermarket, and Pub. Work will commence again on the 7th January 2008, lets hope nobody forgot any items from the shop.

The MV Edinburgh arrived at Tristan on the 19th January, although harbour condition were favorable she did not come to the settlement first to discharge the passengers, but went to the back of the island (Tripot Bay) to unload materials and pump fuel to the tug De Hong.

Though miles physically separate the Roman Catholic Churches in the South Atlantic, they can all be reached with the click of a mouse, now that Monsignor McPartland, the Prefect Apostolic for all the Parishes represented in the ocean, has launched a Church website.
