Tristanians help sick crewman

To many people Tristan is just a speck on the map, others have never heard of it, however if ever your in trouble in the South Atlantic there’s one place you can guarantee assistance, and that’s on the island of Tristan da Cunha.

On the 30th December 2009, the reefer vessel M.V.  Nelson Star made contact with the Tristan Authorities/ Tristan Radio, to advise that they had a crewman who needed medical attention.  The vessel would arrive at 11pm on the 30th December.  The crew of the Police Rib (inshore rescue boat) was informed and was ready to assist the following morning.

The pervious day the weather was excellent, but started to deteriorate on New Years Eve, The Rib went out early mooning to collect the sick crewmen who had lost the ends of two of his fingers in an accident.  This unlucky seaman had previously lost part of his thumb eight years ago.  He was brought ashore and spent a few hours undergoing surgery at Camogli hospital, before being taken back to the vessel.  The vessel then departed for Argentina, where she is expected to collect a cargo of frozen goods.
