Death of Violet Francis Swain
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Violet Swain (nee Glass) on Saturday 22nd November, aged 85. Violet was born on 7th January 1923, the third of six children born to 'Big' Gordon and Susan (nee Repetto) Glass, and is the great-great Grand-daughter of Corporal William Glass.
The Baptism register states that Violet was baptized on the 9th March 1924, by Revd. Martyn Rogers the builder of the first church on this island. Violet's life was that of a commitment believer in Jesus for whom in the words of the island's motto Her Faith Was Her Strength. The Depth and strength of Violet's faith was sorely tested in 1961, it was in that year that Violet at the age of 38 was left a widow with five children to support, following the death of Chrissie her husband. Just two months later she was fleeing for her life at the time of the volcanic eruption. It is a great testimony to her depth of faith and resilience to have coped so bravely with that double blow.
Today, apart from her children on the island she has a daughter Sarah living in Germany and a daughter Wendy living in America. Her elder sister Lilly is still living in England and her younger sister Ada and husband too. Ada's timely arrival on the island in recent weeks was deeply appreciated by Violet.
Violet will be fondly remembered for her warm loving disposition and open friendly personality. Dr. Carel has spoken of her remarkable fortitude and positive attitude during a long and difficult illness. Many will remember her love of the garden; her daily routine of feeding the chickens with Ben the dog in tow; and the family will recollect her years of devoted and loving care of Aunty Martha and how each day until her recent bout of illness took her to Hospital, would close with Violet reading the bible and saying her prayers.
On the 22nd Nov 2008, Violet died and brought to a close the life of a deeply loving mother and sincere Christian soul. The families have asked to publicly Thank and acknowledge the very great kindness of Dr. Carel and all those who have supported Violet and her family over many months.
