TRISTAN - A REGIONAL LOOK AT FINANCIAL INFORMATION

By J. Brock (Tristan Times)

Much of the financial information produced by SARTMA comes from the London and New York Stock Exchanges.  However, those Exchanges in South Africa, where Ascension, St Helena and Tristan do a good percent of their trade have until now been ignored.

It was decided to put this information in Tristan Times due to the relative (a six day journey by sea) location of the Island in relation to South Africa.  Other stock exchanges will be listed as their information is found.

Information in this weekly column will be basic but improve when more data relevant to the South Atlantic Islands is processed.

BRIEF AND BASIC ANALYSIS

Fisheries remain the main industry of the South Atlantic UK Overseas Territories.  Climate change is affecting some of the squid fisheries around the Falklands but there doesn’t seem to be an affect – yet - to the fisheries around Tristan, St Helena and Ascension Islands.

Poaching remains the main threat to fisheries in the South Atlantic, with protection measures and management being world-class in the Falklands and South Georgia. However, fisheries protection is expensive and Governments on other South Atlantic Islands do not have the same financial resources as the Falklands or South Georgia do.

There are a few fisheries companies that have an interest in protecting fish stocks in the region but any way forward will include working together and pooling resources.

One sure way to get rid of poachers is not to have any fish but this is not viable for remote territories that need to have viable fisheries industries.
