Attorney General to take post in Cayman Islands

Attorney General Kurt De Freitas OBE QC, will be leaving St Helena in March of this year to take up his new post of Solicitor General in the Cayman Islands.

His contract was due to expire towards the end of September this year.

However, his new post requires him to take up appointment by April of this year and as such he is unable to remain on St Helena until September. Having already served many years on the Island, the terms of his contract provided for this eventuality.

Mr De Freitas has been working on St Helena as Attorney General for over six years, having firs arrived on the Island in October 1997. During his time on the Island he has also served as Acting Governor and Acting Judge of the Supreme Court.

Barbara George, Chief Personnel Officer said that the St Helena Government is now working on a temporary replacement to fill in as Attorney General after Mr De Freitas leaves, until the post can be advertised and a substantive appointment made.

When contacted Mr De Freitas indicated that his service on St Helena has been very interesting. He stated that he was pleased to have served on the Island where he has made many friends and he is looking forward very much to his new post in the Cayman Islands.
