70 + KNOT WINDS DAMAGE GOUGH WEATHER STATION

By J. Brock and James Glass (SARTMA-TdC)

Rough seas and Gough's high lava cliffs make the Island a dangerous place indeed.

The roof of the weather station at Transvaal Bay on the South Atlantic Island of Gough has blown off in a severe storm, which struck the Island on Friday, 14 November 2003. South African meteorologists man that weather station and they are reported to be uninjured and well.

As yet, there are no official reports about other damage to the Island, which is a World Heritage site. More news will be forthcoming.
