FIRST DAY OF THE 2007/08 FISHING SEASON GETS UNDERWAY

Since the 2nd July the island fishermen has been anxiously waiting for a fishing day, but due to the winters heavy seas and strong westerly winds they have not been given a chance.

This changed on the 1st August and although it was not a perfect day the islanders were glad to get to sea.   The landing was just over 3.7mt for the boats, although it was a late start for some, and mechanical problems with their boats for others.  Another fishing day shortly followed with better weather and the catch increased to just over 5.6mt.  Last year 33mt was caught in July, which means that this year's quota will certainly rollover into the New Year.

It has always been compulsory for boys after leaving school at the age of 15 to do one years apprentice fishing, now for the first time a girl Nicole Glass will experience what it is all about, as she intends to also do a years apprenticeship.   She will be accompanying Andrew Green and Barry Swain and we wish her good luck.
