Tristan : Tug Arrives to Help Re-float Oil Rig
Submitted by Tristan Times (Sarah Glass) 31.12.2006 (Article Archived on 21.01.2007)

The process of removing an oil rig stranded at Tristan da Cunha has begun.

Tug News

The Tug De Hong has arrived at Tristan and is currently busy discharging materials needed to re-float the rig.
On December 30th two barges from Tristan were asked to standby incase the Tug was unable to lay alongside of the rig, however due to excellent weather conditions the tug was able to get in close enough and remain on position using it bow and stern thrusters.  Compressors cutting facilities and welders were discharged to rig in order to remove the helicopter platform and other top structures, to make the rig as light as possible before making an attempt to tow.  The scrap metal will be lower onto the rig to be dump into deep water.
