Tristan : Scottish Parliament Commemorates Tristan's 500th

Following is a message from the Scottish Parliament about Tristan's 500th anniversary.

island of Tristan da Cunha when in 1961 the island was evacuated following a volcanic eruption. The performance at the Byre Theatre is the first of a 5 week tour of Scotland.

Tristan da Cunha, which celebrates its 500th birthday this year, has strong links to Scotland and Conservative MSP Ted Brocklebank, who will attend tonight's preview performance and is on the board of the Byre, has lodged a motion in Parliament calling for the Scottish Executive to present the community with a commemorative gift.

Ted Brocklebank said "I hope Further Than The Furthest Thing will help raise awareness of Tristan da Cunha and am looking forward to seeing it.

"There have always been strong links between Scotland and Tristan da Cunha. The community's founder in 1816, Corporal William Glass, was from Kelso and the island's capital is called Edinburgh.

"It would therefore be only right for the Scottish Executive, on behalf of the people of Scotland, to present Tristan da Cunha with a gift to celebrate the community's 500th birthday.

"The island is fiercely proud of its connections with the Scottish people and Scotland, and this would be an excellent way of ensuring the community was aware that this relationship was reciprocated".

S2M-3935 Mr Ted Brocklebank (Mid Scotland and Fife) (Con) : 500th Anniversary of the Discovery of Tristan Da Cunha- That the Parliament notes that this year is the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the South Atlantic British Overseas Dependency of Tristan da Cunha; acknowledges the historic ties between Scotland and the island, from the founder settler in 1816, Corporal William Glass of Kelso, to the visit in 1867 of HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and the subsequent naming of the settlement community as Edinburgh, and suggests that the Scottish Executive should recognise this anniversary by presenting a commemorative gift to this isolated community which is fiercely proud of its connections with the Scottish people and Scotland.
