Tristan : Telecommunications Prices Rise for Tristan Users
Submitted by Tristan Times (Sarah Glass) 03.10.2005 (Article Archived on 17.10.2005)

The Father and Daughter team of James and Sarah Glass report on Communications costs that face Tristanians.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS PRICES RISE FOR TRISTAN USERS

By James Glass (Tristan Times)

Whilst telecommunications costs are lowering all over the world, it ain’t necessarily so for the remotest populated island in the world.  Spare a thought for Tristan da Cunha, with Morris Minor communications at Rolls Royce prices.

Calls through Cape Town Radio have now been increased to .80p a minute (HF/SSB) to and from Tristan and £1.50 per minute out to the rest of the world.

Average wages on Tristan da Cunha are at £1.50 per hour.  That wouldn’t cover a minute of Satellite phone communications that remain at £1.83 per minute anywhere in the world.
