Though the Overseas Territories Consultative Council will not be meeting until our spring – autumn in the UK, some of the South Atlantic Islands have already chosen the representative who will be attending the event in London. Mrs. Anne Green, Chief Islander, from Tristan da Cunha, will join the seventh Overseas Territories Consultative Council.
Last year representatives from the Falklands and St. Helena attended and discussed items like the affects of Constitutional Change, Sustainable Development and EU assistance for development. Another area discussed was the OTC Environmental programme. A considerable amount of time was also spent discussing Disaster Preparedness.
Though the Overseas Territories Consultative Council meets once a year, contacts made at the meeting have a lasting affect. Above all, friendships and professional relationships forged at these meetings makes it easier to keep in touch throughout the year. When you think of how isolated some of the territories are, then it’s a minor miracle when so many representatives can get together in one place. It is the meaningful conversations and sharing of ideas that helps melt away the miles and draw the Overseas Territories together.
