Tristan Whitefish Licensing Agreement
By James Glass (Tristan Times)
The Island Council have approved a recommendation from Natural Resources Department for co-operative link with Ladywood AS, a Norwegian fishing company operating out of Cape Town. The agreement, signed in December for an initial two-year period, will permit the company to operate a long-line fishing vessel in Tristan waters. In return, the company will provide passenger and freight services between Tristan and Cape Town.
Welcoming the longer-term agreement, Administrator Mike Hentley noted three advantages for the Island: earnings from the licensing fee; extra passenger and cargo services to meet the increasing demand; and an additional presence of legitimate vessels to deter unauthorized fishing activities. He confirmed that the agreement would be subject to Tristan's range of licensing conditions regarding conservation and environmental protection.
