A collaborative song-writing project has started to bring rewards to the children of Tristan da Cunha.

Two years ago, Tony Triggs, who lives in England and teaches music, contacted the island’s education advisor, Jim Kerr, suggesting that poems written by Jim’s pupils could be turned into songs.

Jim took up the idea, sending poems by email. Tony’s pupils set them to music for the poets to sing and they also produced a desktop publication entitled Rockhopper Penguins and Other Songs, containing most of the songs complete with piano and guitar accompaniment.

Sales of this have been raising money for guitars and other instruments for the island school and last week saw the children excitedly unwrapping and strumming the first five guitars! Jim’s photograph shows the happy ensemble (prior to tuning!).
