Governor Gurr to Pay Official Visit to Tristan

His Excellency, Governor Gurr departed the island on 18th January 2011 for an official visit to Tristan da Cunha. This is the first visit Governor Gurr will pay to the Territory.

En route to Tristan, the Governor and Mrs Gurr will be hosting a reception on the RMS in Cape Town for those in South Africa who are interested in St Helena or Tristan.

Unfortunately Mrs. Gurr will not be able to continue from Cape Town to Tristan as she will be returning to the UK for a family funeral.

The Governor should be able to spend two full days on Tristan and hopes to be able to meet all of the inhabitants. There will of course be meetings with the Chief Islander, the Island Council and the Administrator, but the schedule also includes visits to the new fish factory, the Conservation Department, the Communications Centre, the Museum, the Post Office and the School. There will also be a public reception and a tea with pensioners as well as a visit to the Camlogi Hospital.

If the weather holds, then a walk on the volcano and a visit to the Potato Patches will take place.

When asked about his visit the Governor said:

“I am really looking forward to visiting an island that must be on all island lovers’ list of places to see. Over the past three years I have been disappointed three times as advanced plans to get to Tristan have fallen through. Now at last I will be able to see the place and meet the people that I have heard so much about.”

Whilst away from the island Chief Secretary, Andrew Wells will act as Acting Governor and Gillian Francis as Acting Chief Secretary until His Excellency’s return on 6th February 2011.
