STORM DAMAGES CALSHOT HARBOUR
By Sarah Glass (Tristan Times)
On the night of Friday 19th June 2010 a bad storm hit Calshot Harbour, causing severe damage to the west breakwater. Dolosse slipped away on the NW point of the harbour, in direct line with the west breaker.
The house that was stationed at the bottom of the harbor, which was used to keep oils etc for the crane, was washed away and the fisheries storage container was moved to the edge of the cement slab that it was sitting on. The cargo raft that has been used for many months was also damaged, and there is a possibility that it may not be able to be repaired here. The factory bait freezer and pipes pumping water for the tanks at the factory was also damage.
Luckily the fishing boats were parked up at the factory, as they were getting maintenance work done on them before the start of the season on the 1st July. If they were at the harbor we could have lost the fleet.
The hole in the wall and the blocks that were moved from the bait slab, are now being put back in place and the quay is being tidied up. With any luck, the new fishing season will be able to start soon.
