SABBATICAL FOR TRISTAN’S ONLY POLICEMAN
By J. Brock (SARTMA)
Arriving at Tristan da Cunha on the RMS St. Helena on Tuesday will be Police Constable Dave Rogers, son of Raymond “Scorchy” Joshua and Felicity Joshua. He will be filling in for Tristan’s only Policeman, Inspector Conrad Glass, who is off for a year on some well-earned leave. Whilst in the UK, Inspector Glass intends to publish a book that he has written about being the Island’s only Police Officer.
Truly a 24/7/365 man, Conrad Glass hasn’t had a holiday in a long time. “After five years, I accumulated six months leave,” he added when contacted on Thursday. With six months unpaid leave added on to that, the year will come in handy as Mr. Glass plans to spend it in the UK, while working and as the book is published. Mr. Glass and his wife, Sharon, plan to return to Tristan in April 2005, when Conrad will again take up his post of Inspector.
Constable Dave Rogers will be accompanied by his wife, Fiona, a Tristanian who has been away from the Island for ten years. “I am thrilled to be returning home and seeing my family and friends again,” said Fiona to St. Helena Herald.
As for Constable Roberts, he has set a record of sorts in that he is the first St. Helena Police Officer to have served on all three Islands – Ascension, St. Helena, and now Tristan.
