Tristan Observes Remembrance Sunday

On Sunday the 9th November the annual Remembrance Sunday service was held at St Mary's Church. It was a united service, when both Anglicans and Roman Catholics came to worship together. Following the service, the congregation processed to the flagpole in front of the Prince Phillip Hall, for a wreath laying ceremony, the first in Tristan history.
Although there has been little or no direct involvement by islanders in past conflicts, over the years the South Atlantic has seen a great deal of military action involving British and Commonwealth Forces and the island possesses great strategic importance.
So the Church Leaders agreed that we should commemorate this event with a modest ceremony following the service. This will honour the memory of all those of our servicemen and women who have perished in previous conflicts and show our support and commitment for current and future efforts by those who work to maintain peace and security around the world.
The Administrator laid a wreath on behalf of Her Majesty's Government and the Acting Chief Islander (Lorraine Repetto) laid one on behalf of the Tristan Government and the community. Both delivered brief eulogies after which Father Chris closed the ceremony with a concluding pray.
Next year the event will take place at St Joseph's
