Death of Albert Glass BEM
It is with sad news that we announce the death of Albert Glass on 18th August 2007 aged 72. Albert was born on the 25th January 1935 to parents Frank and Clara (Mary) Glass (nee Swain) and was a great-great grandson of the founder of the Tristan community Corporal William Glass.
He married Rose Repetto, was a fishermen and spent many years on the fishing vessels before becoming Tristan's first policeman in 1967, after returning from training at Hendon Police College in England. He served as Tristan's second elected Chief Islander from 1973 -1979 and also 1982-1985. He has always been known as “Sarge” to the islanders, and was awarded the BEM in 1977 for his service to the community.
“Sarge” ran the Scout Movement for many years, taking the young boys camping at Stony Beach, Sandy Point and the Caves, where he learnt many of them to swim. The Scouts have never really been active since his retirement from the Police in 1989.
He will be missed by family and friends for his friendly smile and sense of humour, as well as the contribution he made in leading Tristan into the modern age after the 1961 volcano.
