All : Some CENTR members and ICANN work to improve Internet
Submitted by (Nathan Prince) 22.09.2006 (Article Archived on 06.10.2006)

Brussels: Some CENTR members participating in the Internet Infrastructure Improvement Account have today agreed to donate to ICANN the sum of $190.000 to stimulate improvements in the IANA services provided to the global community.

The ten Registries making the donation operate the Top Level Domains ending in: .AC; .AT; .BV; .DE; .GG ; .IR .LU; .NO ; .SI .SJ.

CENTR Chairman Paul Kane (manager of nic.AC) said “we were pleased to support ICANN in its recent bid to operate the contract to deliver IANA services, the central road-map database of the Internet. Since 2003 we have been working closely with ICANN and IANA staff to drive the recent improvements. A specific example is the automation project called e-IANA endorsed by ccTLD Registries from around the world that once deployed will further improve the efficiency of the IANA service to the Registry Community.”

Paul Twomey, CEO of ICANN, said in a letter to the group, “I’d like to thank you and your ccTLD colleagues for the very constructive dialogue we have had over recent times. We are grateful for your recognition of our progress improving the IANA function. We continue our drive to improve IANA services, including automating workflows, and see the community’s continued counsel and collaboration to ensure we meet its needs. Keeping in mind our shared goal of secure and stable operation of the core Internet Infrastructure, we are grateful to accept contributions to ICANN for use in its IANA improvement projects.”

Richard Wein, (manager of nic.AT) and Chair of the Fund said “This donation underlines the commitment of support by the 10 registries, fostering ICANN's role as efficient operator of community services, promoting greater collaboration, and furthering a peer-to-peer relationship. We are investing into our service chain - benefiting equally the global community. The Internet governance debate is in danger of losing sight who this is all about. Together we prove that industry self-governance is alive and works where it really counts - improving services for all users.
