Teacher Training Advisor, Garry Cameron, recently arrived on-Island to take up his post within the Education & Employment Directorate.

NEW TEACHER TRAINER FOR EDUCATION & EMPLOYMENT

Teacher Training Advisor, Garry Cameron, recently arrived on-Island to take up his post within the Education & Employment Directorate.

Garry brings with him a wealth of experience of teaching in Scotland ranging from the primary sector all the way through secondary and further education to the university sector. He has been training teachers throughout his career, notably in his role as a lecturer in one of Scotland’s teacher training colleges and at the University of Dundee where he was a programme leader for the Diploma in Inclusive Educational Practice and a professional studies tutor for primary and secondary teachers.

Garry said:

“My knowledge and experience to date will facilitate the delivery of the Initial Teacher Training Model already developed. The blended learning approach to delivery of the qualifications aligned to the Professional Standards for teachers is very similar to the work I have been doing over two decades.”

Garry is on a two-year contract and hopes that during this time he can help local teachers develop the ‘craft of the classroom’ based on a foundation of key learning and teaching principles. He also aims to encourage new teachers to perceive teaching as a lifelong learning career where they are always learning and developing for the focus of their efforts – the children and young people.

Garry concluded:

“Children and young people anywhere deserve great teachers who develop their learning potential and ability. This requires well-trained and qualified teachers who have the knowledge, understanding and skills to create and sustain quality first learning environments which will raise attainment and achievement in schools. Making a significant contribution to this aim is what I hope to accomplish.”
