DEMINING TO CONTINUE IN THE FALKLANDS

A representative from Baric Consultants, Alistair Craib, an FCO Advisor, Jeremy Wilmshurst and several operators interested in bidding for two Falklands’ demining contracts have been visiting the Falklands this week. Up for tender is the removal of mines from Minefield 59 on either sides of the MPA Road near Wall Mountain and Mount Harriet, (the highest priority) Eliza Cove minefield and an area to the north, as well as a booby trapped area and an area that has not yet been determined but needs to be assessed and cleared, along the MPA road close to Stanley, south of Sapper Hill and west along the road, three minefields just south of Stanley; and for the demining project office.
Mr Craib explained to FIRS that it was usual to have the two contracts and that it was representatives from the demining project office that operated as the public voice for the project. He went on to say that later in September the Baric Consultants will sit down and consider which demining companies would get the contracts.
Approximately £4 Million over the financial years 2014/15 and 2015/16 has been allocated from HMG for the project.
According to Mr Craib it is hoped the demining will begin at the end of November 2014 and finish at the end of March 2016. However, he could not guarantee that the minefields would be cleared by then.
